"...this is bad territory. Ravines, bogs, hills made of bone. Moreover, it is inhabited, and not by gentlefolk."

The Hinterlands are the huge, mostly empty swath of land that lies between Fallen London and Hell.

UNDER CONSTRUCTION

WEST

The Stolen River (Thames) flows through this inland plain, from Hell to the Unterzee. [1] Most of the Hinterlands are uninhabited, and have been so for millennia, with only a few First City ruins to indicate anyone ever lived here. A few modern-day settlements are scattered around the Upper River, along the brand-new Great Hellbound Railway. [2]

Stations

Past Marigold

Marigold Station stands in the vicinity of several landmarks of the Hinterlands:

  • On a hill near the station lies the ruins of an Amphitheatre.[3] Beneath it is a chasm that serves as the prison of a Grand Devil, the Mandolinist.[4]
  • Through the Lamentation of Violets, past the old battlefields of Hell, lies the chapel of another Grand Devil, the Chandler.[5] This chapel is the meeting place of the Brazen Brigade, a group that seeks to free Marigold Knights of their duties.[6][7]
  • Saint Trezigor's Folly was a communal living place for a group of goat-demons long ago;[8] now, it only contains their bones.[9]
  • South of Hell lies the Edict of Towers:[10] an old defensive array of walls and towers, only one-fifth of which, or even fewer, are real.
  • The Lilymire served as Hell's graveyard[11] until it was flooded by the city's waste.[12] It is now a marsh, filled with candles that grow out of rotting lilies.
  • A road paved with white stone leads to the entrance to Hell.[13] The great city calls...
