WORK IN PROGRESS

The Hinterlands are the huge, mostly empty swath of land that lies between Fallen London and Hell. The Stolen River (Thames) flows through this inland plain, from Hell to the Unterzee. [1] Most of the Hinterlands are uninhabited, and have been so for millennia, with only a few First City ruins to indicate anyone ever lived here. A few modern-day settlements are scattered around the Upper River, along the brand-new Great Hellbound Railway. [2] These include:

  • Ealing Gardens, closest to London and home to Rubbery folk.
  • Jericho Locks, the next closest, which serves as home for those who work the canals in the Upper River.
  • The Magistracy of the Evenlode, a settlement atop First City ruins that is the outer bound of the reach of London's laws.
  • Balmoral, the Empress's Scottish holding that has fallen with London into the Neath.
  • Station VIII, reminiscent of its sinister counterparts, a lone factory that extracts emotions in chemical form.
  • Burrow-Infra-Mump, a lonely church next to Hell's figurative gates.
