"The Calendar Council: a shadowy organisation of revolutionaries, the enemies of the Masters."[1]
The Calendar Council is the primary revolutionary organization in London. Its members, named after the months of the year, are for the most part plotting and planning for their end goal, the Liberation of Night. The philosophy behind it is spreading across the Unterzee and up to the Surface, and predates the Council itself.[2]
The Council's records are kept in a library that they have named the Agendums of Ascent.[3]
Members
- The current January is the Masked Curator. She is the founder of the Museum of Injustice, which exhibits many forms and acts of oppression.[4]
- February is searching for the Cave of the Nadir in the Forgotten Quarter, as it is of great interest to her cause.[5] She's also involved in Knife-and-Candle, and is a sworn rival of Mr Iron.[6][7]
- The previous March was John Cassell, publisher of the Working Man's Friend and The Echo.[8] He was a coffee-seller[9] and self-proclaimed sworn enemy of Mr Wines.[10] He was killed by the Haunted Doctor, who had been hired to do it by the rest of the Council.[9][11] While there was consideration of offering the position to Furnace Ancona,[12] it appears to have been filled by an unknown man.[13]
- April is a deaf explosives expert, Emilia Hathersage, who is presumed dead by most of London.[14]
- May is a frequent visitor of the nightmare-plagued.[8]
- June was the original architect of the Dawn Machine.[8] She is distrusted by the rest of the Council.[11]
- July was once a cultured society lady and violinist, but she lost her mind to a powerful Fingerking. She trades her memories for dreams of the future.[15]
- August is none other than the Jovial Contrarian, who knows quite a bit about various revolutionary causes despite not always being involved in them.[16]
- September stirs unrest in Balmoral, a Scottish holding of London that fell to the Neath with the city.[17]
- October dabbles in dreams and mirrors. She won the Marvellous and wished for her dreams to come true; as a consequence, she was trapped in Parabola, but managed to imprison Mr Mirrors in the process.[18][19]
- November has been missing for quite a while. Her lost cell and comrades have been trying to enact her plan in her stead, and maybe hasten her return.[20]
- The leader of the Calendar Council is December, the Boatman’s sibling,[21] although nobody except The Bishop of St Fiacre's seems to know much about this ambiguously gendered individual. they seem adamant about either destroying or sharing the Mountain of Light's vitality.[22][23]
Historical and Cultural Inspirations
The idea of having leaders named after months may have come from G. K. Chesterton's The Man Who Was Thursday, about a bunch of anarchists (or so we are supposed to think) with leaders named after days of the week.
