"You rush down the last stretch of the path to the Carnival, sleeves dusted with crystal-shards. Are you in time?"[1]

Mrs Plenty's Carnival...

The time is now 14:39 UTC. Regardless, you made it in time.

Distracting

"It's hard to be sure, sometimes, exactly what's real. Perhaps you only imagined that little ritual. Perhaps you'd have arrived on time in any case. Perhaps all those secrets were only fog. But here you are."[2]

Mrs Plenty's Carnival is a popular and crowded attraction in London,[3] run by and named after its owner Mrs Plenty;[4] she has duties[5] she could never let go.[6] This may or may not be the same Carnival. It's unclear if this Carnival is even real; it may all just be a dream.[7] Either way, it can be accessed via a ritual[2] or by arriving in time at exactly midnight. But this is costly: a single misstep can be most distracting.[1]

The Carnival's stalls require tickets from customers.[8] Tickets are purchased in moon-pearls for the price beyond price. Admit one, and only ever one.[9]

The Big Top

"A riot of colour! A sea of sound! A place where polite society's rules relax and a costermonger may rub shoulders with a bishop."[10]

The Big Top is the main tent of the Carnival.[10] It is completely empty. Performing onstage will draw jeers and mockery from no one. All who perform here know this.[11]

The Sideshows

"The ragged little tents around the edges of the carnival. Throw quoits! Bet on the shell game! Get a tattoo! Have your pocket picked five times in an hour!"[12]

The Sideshows are the less grandiose tents found near the Carnival's outskirts.[12] They feature the Big Rat and the Eater-of-Chains.[13][14] Neither has much to say.

There is also a fungus-column here.[15] Further inquiries are welcomed.

Refreshments

"The pavilion is less civilised than it sounds. Some of its wares are surprisingly tasty, if you're brave enough to try them."[16]

The Refreshment Pavilion offers many interesting foods and drinks.[16] Visitors here consume raw meat, fungi, nearby poles, their own memories and limbs...[17]

Carnival Games

"The air thrums with the furtive energy of money changing hands. Games of skill. Games of chance. The occasional thrown lizard snatching a bat from the air. What could be better?"[18]

The Games Tent hosts many games of both skill and chance.[18] But only one game seems to be played here right now.[18] The Red-Handed Queen is in a chess match with the Beleaguered King. A rather long match, mind.[19]

Above the Neath

"You realise that the sign has changed; and that the wheel now ascends into the roof of the cavern, far above the false-stars. It would return you to the Surface, where the sunlight would shrivel you like a slug."[20]

A Ferris wheel.
The wheel turns.

Beneath the Neath is a partially submerged Ferris wheel that takes passengers into a cavern below the Carnival. Most passengers return soon after.[21]

That would be the case, if the sign wasn't changed. Now, the ride takes passengers far above, where [REDACTED BY THE MINISTRY OF PUBLIC DECENCY].[20]

The House of Mirrors

"The House of Mirrors squats like an ape in a quiet corner of the carnival. Strange mirrors are labelled in a neat, scholarly hand. It is not a popular attraction."[22]

The House of Mirrors is an unpopular attraction in an obscure section of the Carnival. It contains many labeled mirrors with strange properties.[22]

But it's completely dark there, now. No mirror can be distinguished from another.[23]

MADNESS

"You can contain many, but not multitudes."[24]

A shadowy man with a long mask.
An escape?

"CLEFT FOR THEE HIDE IN ME"[25]

"Eyes in the temple walls. They watch. Carved irises and eyelids and pupils dilated, chiseled to observe the rites the priest-king works upon the stone altar. They will never stop watching. Never. They are always open. They are painted, and plated with radiant bronze. The walls are wrong. The walls are always wrong."[25]

DEATH

"Once again, you have gone too far."[26]

"FEED US"[25]

"Teeth clogged with gore. Red. Dripping. More. Beasts slaughtered, feasts spread on the floor. Our fingers probe their bones. We chew. Amongst the smoke, the popping fat, we devour the dead until our hungers have been fed. Feed us. Feed us more than the dead."[25]
