In General[edit]
Shades (or known as spirits) are what happened to a living being after they die. When you died, you became shade. The purpose of every Shade in the Blue Kingdom is to pass through Death's Door, a celestial gate in the northernmost part of the Blue Kingdom.
Shades of those that dabbled in immortality (but died anyway) are known as the Failed Dead/ Erroneous Dead.
Journey to the North[edit]
The Shades began their journey at the Toll-Tower in the Sky Barnet. They appeared "through gates that are never closed". Before the establishment of the London embassy (and even longer before that?), spirits have to pay a toll to enter the rest of the Blue Kingdom.
Next, they are judged at the Stone-Faced Court. Those who are deemed as Failed Dead/Erroneous Dead are thrown into the White Well.
Then, Shades that are not Yoked that have undergone the above process are to visit the Endless Furrows. There, they have to dig to find their own door to enter the Catafalque. After that they have to undergo several trial, such as having their name, face, and unfinished stories taken.
Finally they are to pass through Death's Door. Spirits that still have soul flaws may not pass through Death's Door.
Petrichor[edit]
The Shades eat Petrichor, a spun-sugar confectionary made out of ichor(?). Petrichor are made out of many shape, such as the shape of a fruit or a steak, but they all taste the same. They

- Are the soul of the Shades the same soul as they are in life? What happened to the spirits who lost their souls in the life and/or have their souls eaten by a Judgements?
- What of the "Far Country"? Is it a different afterlife than the Blue Kingdom? Is it another part of the Blue Kingdom? Is it an afterlife only for the Tomb-Colonist
- And what are the role of the Boatman?
