The Jovial Contrarian has had Feducci's chair brought to Mutton Island and put up in a place of honour. "Mayoral tradition," he calls it. "That I have just made up."

"The beauty of it, if I may say so myself, is that it can represent whoever or whatever you want it to. My policies, Feducci's, Feducci himself. Really: we should abolish the Mayoralty and replace it with that chair."

The Jovial Contrarian is a writer and a lover of debate. Known to flip-flop between positions from column to column, conversation to conversation, the Contrarian ran for mayor twice on opposite platforms; he succeeded the second time, and is the current Mayor of London.

There's a "volume of polemic" in a depository of knowledge used by the Calendar Council - that is, a book about debate and the joy of the spoken word. Given his other ties with Revolutionaries, it seems likely that the Contrarian is the author of this book. He is assumed to be August, one of the Calendar Council.
