"Afterward, Hell, having no interest in maintaining a military garrison, forged a highly local law to ensure that the waterwheel could be used by no one. Now it burns constantly."[1]
The Eversmoulder is a burning water wheel in the Hinterlands,[2] accessible from Jericho Locks.[3] It was once used by Hell to power an outpost that watched over the canals, but during the Campaign of '68 it was captured by London. After the war, Hell abandoned the area, and invoked an infernal law to leave the wheel eternally burning, even as water runs through it.[4]
Mysteriously, graffiti and writings can be found here that hint at the workings of the Great Game.[5][6]
Historical and Cultural Inspirations
The Eversmoulder is called a "Catherine Wheel" in-game;[7] this is a reference to the Catherine wheel type of firework, which was in turn named after Catherine of Alexandria. According to the story of Catherine's martyrdom, she was to be executed by breaking wheel, a tortuous medieval execution method, but she shattered the wheel with a single touch. Thus, she is often depicted accompanied by a wheel.
