"These devils guard the woods here. The forests have existed long before London, and provide cover from watchful eyes. An accord with the Guild lets them make use of the river that runs through the grove, in exchange for certain intelligence."[1]

The Cedar-Woods are an ancient forest[2] of burnt trees in the Hinterlands,[3] accessible from Jericho Locks. The woods have been disowned by Hell,[4] and so have its residents: exiled devils[5] wearing tattered uniforms. They patrol the woods in secret, and have been given permission by the Guild of Gondoliers to use the woods' river in exchange for providing information to the Guild.[6] Notably, this agreement has been kept secret from London.[7]
