"She styles herself 'the last honest Special Constable in London'. And she wants to bring down the Cheery Man, who controls Watchmaker's Hill."[2]
The Last Constable is the self-proclaimed "last honest Special Constable in London," having distanced herself from her colleagues when they fell in with the Ministry of Public Decency and the Masters of the Bazaar. Her primary objective is to dismantle the criminal operations of her father, the Cheery Man, a notorious crime lord in the city.[3] A dedicated investigator, the Last Constable spends much of her time holed up in an office above Caligula’s Coffee-House. She is an avid drinker of their coffee, which keeps her working but deprives her of much-needed sleep.[4]
The Constable was born into a family that once ruled Spite and beyond through crime, making many enemies. Though her father is still infamous, her mother was equally ruthless — perhaps even worse. One day, the Last Constable and her father arrived at Beatrice’s to meet her mother, only to find a deadly ambush unfolding. Though her mother fought fiercely and took down many of her attackers, she did not survive, leaving her husband alone to raise their daughter.[5] Before her death, the Constable's mother had requested a coffin filled with sunlight should the worst happen; the Cheery Man dismissed the idea that she would ever need it, yet after her death, he sealed her within it, ensuring the tomb remained utterly lethal to any who dared disturb it.[6]
The Last Constable's relentless pursuit of her father’s operations made her a target, forcing him to send goons after her.[7] Realizing how dire the situation had become, she fled London for Port Carnelian[8] and then deeper into the Elder Continent.[9] She planned to stay abroad permanently, free from her past identities.[10] However, at the Feast of the Exceptional Rose, she returned to the city in disguise, to briefly enjoy the festivities without the weight of her old life.[11] The anniversary of her mother’s death ultimately drew her to her mother’s tomb,[12] where she made a decision to end the family feud once and for all.[13]
