"You can see immediately that the Cantigaster was once a man. Now he is a living, shuddering sac of poison. His flesh swells green and soft like rotting fruit. Foul venoms ooze beneath his skin."
The Cantigaster is a bloated and horrifying creature, which possesses—and oozes—the deadliest venom known to man.
A Permanent Form of Death
Cantigaster venom can bring a more permanent form of death than that usually suffered by residents of the Neath, and it works best when applied to a blade,[1] though it expires fast.[2] It can be dried to retain its deadly effects.[3] The Cheery Man was poisoned with half a drop of Cantigaster venom, which left him barely able to walk[4] and do other things.[5] Even its vapours are dangerous, as one sniff took away the Sardonic Music-Hall Singer's colleague's voice.[6]
The Masters of the Bazaar are immune to Cantigaster venom.[7] It's possible that the Duchess is also immune; after all, she is not very careful with her procedures.[8]

"The Duchess kisses him fondly and they embrace. You watch as the Duchess... as she milks the poison from his skin. The Cantigaster sighs with relief as his venoms trickle into a stone bucket. The Duchess looks up. Has she seen you? You flee the cellar."[8]
The Cantigaster is locked away in the Palace cellars, where it is occasionally attended to by the Duchess.[9] Beneath the oozing, swollen flesh of the monster is the Duchess's father-husband,[10] bitten by an asp, a twenty-foot long Egyptian cobra with midnight blue belly and potent venom in its fangs,[11] before the fall of the Second City in Egypt. The snake was sent by the Duchess, who wanted to kill her father in order to be with her lover, a scribe.[12] She regretted this action immediately[13][14] and bargained with the Bazaar to save the pharaoh's life in exchange for her city.[15][16] Whatever methods the Masters devised to save his life did the job and he lived on, but it also left him in this tormented state.[17]
The Duchess still visits him at midnight each Sunday, in the third wine cellar under the Shuttered Palace,[9] to milk venom out of his skin and bring him relief; what she takes away, presumably, is Cantigaster venom.[18]
There are some implications that the Pharaoh[19] had a more active part in securing the deal between the Bazaar and the Second City.[20][21]
Historical Inspirations
The Cantigaster's true identity is the Pharaoh Akhenaten—the Duchess's father. Born as Amenhotep IV, he ascended the throne and reshaped Egyptian religion, casting aside the traditional pantheon in favor of Aten, the sun disk, as the supreme deity. To solidify this radical shift, he abandoned Thebes and established a new capital: Akhetaten (modern-day Amarna), a city devoted entirely to his monotheistic vision. His reign marked one of the most dramatic religious transformations in Egyptian history.
Akhenaten’s family life has long been a subject of fascination and debate among scholars. His Great Royal Wife, Nefertiti, was renowned for her beauty, influence, and possible co-regency. Together, they had six daughters: Meritaten, Meketaten, Ankhesenpaaten (later Ankhesenamun), Neferneferuaten Tasherit, Neferneferure, and Setepenre. He also had a lesser-documented wife, Kiya, whose exact role in his court remains unknown.
Some Egyptologists have suggested that Akhenaten may have married one or more of his daughters—a practice not uncommon among Egyptian royalty to preserve dynastic purity. Meritaten, his eldest, bore titles that imply she may have served as his consort. However, definitive proof of these marriages remains elusive, leaving the subject open to debate among Egyptologists.
