"He's a good engineer, despite that missing hand. But zailors fall silent when he passes."[1]

The Genial Magician is a magician and engineer with a hook for a hand.[2]

Watch for Clocks[edit]

He lost his job after losing his hand to a Fingerking,[3] and he's sworn revenge on said serpent.[4] Despite his handicap, he is still able to perform some genuinely magical magic tricks, albeit with certain preparations.[5]

How Did He Lose His Hand?[edit]

Some years ago, the Genial Magician made a deal with the Fingerkings. He was assigned to deliver a box (containing dream-snakes)[6] to a young female contractor (probably Sophia) at the Department of Menace Eradication in Watchmaker's Hill, and the Fingerkings would tell him the secret to one of the illusionist Monsieur Pleat's tricks.[7] However, the Magician betrayed the snakes, revealing the sender’s identity to the recipient, who promptly disposed of the box down a chasm. Evidently, the Fingerkings were not pleased and took away his hand as punishment.[8]

  2. Genial Magician, Sunless Sea "He's a good engineer, despite that missing hand. But zailors fall silent when he passes."
  3. Ask bluntly about his hook, Sunless Sea “A snake bit it off.” For once, he is not smiling. “I put my hand through an unwise mirror... and a snake bit it off. That ended my career in the theatre.”
  4. Ask bluntly about his hook, Sunless Sea “I am not a spiteful man. But I lost my hand. Perhaps you can imagine what that means to a magician. I am looking for revenge, Captain. I need weapons against the serpent. I rather hope we might come across them. I may ask a favour of you, if we do.”
  5. Dispel the darkness?, Sunless Sea "The Magician appears. His eyes are mirrors. (Lenses, no doubt!) He has four arms, like an Indian god. (Surrogates, like his hook, surely.) He exhales blue fire! (Alcohol vapour, probably.) He raises his arms, and the air is filled with golden petals. (Up his sleeve!) Vines leap from the deck, twine his legs, creep up past his waist. (Did he release narcotic vapours?) The air is filled with viric light, and the Neath-roof above trembles, seems to open to a sky with an orange sun. Long grasses rise around you. (Er...)"
  6. Betray the Genial Magician's Trust, Fallen London "The Ophidian Gentleman smiles. You can count his yellowed teeth. "The chasm at Mrs Plenty's Carnival? [...] The prisoners in the dark are again near to freedom. Perhaps we —""
  7. Genial Magician, Fallen London "Monsieur Pleat refused to reveal the secret of the 'Moulting of Pleat's Eidolon at Hallowmas'. I went to his patrons. They promised to teach me his arts – if I delivered a certain box to a certain contractor for the Department of Menace Eradication."
  8. Genial Magician, Fallen London "My conscience betrayed me. I delivered the box, but warned the young lady of its origins. She disposed of it in the chasm beneath the Carnival. When I returned to my mirror, the things behind offered me my reward." He clinks his hook against his mug. "They were not, it transpires, pleased."
