"His expensive hat and booming laugh give him away. A man worth knowing. He has influence at The Shuttered Palace"
Personality
His Amused Lordship is a nobleman with a taste for the unusual, often found at social events, salons, and in the company of those who intrigue him. [1]
His Amused Lordship is characterized by his wit, affable demeanor, and seemingly endless amusement at the strangeness of the Neath. Unlike many nobles who cling to propriety, he delights in scandal, eccentricity, and intellectual stimulation. He is well-connected in high society and can often be found mingling with both the aristocracy and more bohemian circles.[2]
He is particularly interested in the arts, social intrigue, and political machinations, often using his influence to advance those he finds entertaining or promising.[3]
The Dilmun Club
An association of academics whose main goal is the attainment of immortality, His Amused Lordship is counted among its members. He is one of the more approachable and affable members of the club, often serving as an intermediary or source of information for those who wish to understand its inner workings. Those who catches his eyes are invited to meetings in Orchard House, and eventually be inducted into the club.[4][5]
His goal is the same as all his peers—The Garden, but he does not appear to share the same level of urgency, desperation, and caution of some members. Instead he revels in the excitement the Club's quests bring.[6] He sympathises and enthusiastically supports The Youthful Naturalist for this reason.[7]
The Marvelous & The Name
His Amused Lordship was a player of The Marvellous, a game where the prize is the fulfilment of the winner's wish.[8] He played his way to the final round, only to run out of coins at the last moment. Undeterred, he staked his title and all its estates for one final chance—and won.[9] In the end, he triumphed—and with his Wish, he saved Mrs Plenty from the ruinous path of Seeking Mr Eaten's Name.[10]Amusingly enough, Mr Eaten may still hold a grudge against him for this.[11]
Unfortunately, His Amused Lordship failed to save his own wife. Long before Miriam abandoned Seeking, she had a companion in the quest—His Amused Lordship's wife. When the path demanded betrayal, his wife sought his help, but by then, his affection for Miriam had grown. Instead, he warned Miriam. Soon after, his wife vanished, never to be seen again.[12]Out of respect—or perhaps unease—newspapers carefully avoid mentioning his marriage status.[13]
A Cancelled Party
When The Dawning of a New Century was fast approaching, His Amused Lordship was busying himself preparing for a grand New Year's party, purchasing enourmous quantities of wines.[14] However, after The Empress declared the 18th century to be on indefinite pause, he found himself bereft of the promised celebration, left with piles of unopened champagne bottles—and a mountain of debt. His Amused Lordship, in an effort to recuop his losses, sold all his excess wines.[15]
Miscellaneous Facts
- He's a founding member of The Great Hellbound Railway[16]. He dislikes Cornelius.[17]
- He owns a yacht, the Noble Garter.[18] Another ship (a wrecked one) in his possesion is the St Elmo, where he gathers and lead a motley Crew of ne'er-do-wells to do mischief.[19]
- He is a connoisseur of wines and an array of other drinks that could generously be described as alcoholic.[20] Unsurprisingly, this drinking habit earned him a rather severe case of gout, which he has chosen to treat with evil snails.[21][22]
Real-Life Inspiration
His character is based on British actor Brian Blessed.[23]
