"There are some things we were not meant to know, they say. But you wouldn't be down here if you took that seriously."

"You duck under a lashing pink frond, and grab the column's cap. You slice a chunk off and leap away before the frond returns for a second swipe. Close up, the column is the same dusty pink as a debutante's dress. Of course, it's been a while since a debutante tried to slice your head off."[1]

Fungus-Towers,[2] also called Fungus-Columns,[3] are twelve-foot tall monstrosities[4] weighing two-tons[5] that menace Bugsby's Marshes near Watchmaker's Hill.[6] They are also found in the tunnels above Flute Street, where they stampede in hoards numbering in the hundreds.[7] They are aggressive creatures,[8] and possess barbed fronds and acidic effluence with which they attack enemies.[9][10] They are also impervious to most forms of damage, including bullets, though axes usually bring them down with some effort.[11]

Fungus-Towers' caps can be used as treats for certain creatures.[12][13] Despite their savagery, they can be surprisingly tricky, using their unique anatomy to ooze through cages, or emitting noises to communicate threats.[14] It is said that every St Martin's Day, the Fungus-Towers of the Marsh convene to perform mysterious "glum rites."[2]
