Station VIII

"Factory VIII is a monstrosity of brick and glass, its towering walls and high up windows lending it the air of a prison. The factory does not produce the foul coal stench of those in London, instead it emits bright clouds of pungent scents – which occasionally bring passers-by to tears."

Station VIII is a large chemical factory located in The Hinterlands as well as the fifth station of the Great Hellbound Railway.

Monstrosity of Brick and Glass

"Huge vats hang suspended from the ceiling by thick, steel chains. An array of gurgling pipes and taps draw away garish fluids into pressurised containers and retorts. Massive hammers make repetitive thumps. Steam shrieks from vents. The factory is unpleasantly loud."

Station VIII, also known as Factory VIII, is a Master-controlled facility that produces a variety of emotion-inducing substances. The creation of said substances involves a variety of lenghty chemical processes that extract a specific emotion from an item suffused with sentimental value. These production methods are a closely guarded secret, protected from outsider eyes by a number of surly guards that constantly patrol the factory. The aforementioned items are usually tracked down and collected by Pinnock, a resourceful Rattus Faber that also works as the partner of the The Shivering Relicker.

The main floor of the factory is devoted to the mass production of simpler products; the large machinery creates constant amounts of noise and breathing in the fumes from the half-processed sentiments can cause unwanted emotional reactions witch forces the workers to cover their mouths and noses with cloth when they're working. A separate room, filled with all manner of chemical equipment, is used to experiment with samples and produce the more complicated substances.

The Station VIII's immediate surroundings are limited to the four houses that house the factory's workers, a small pub that's sometimes also used as a makeshift school, and a tall dirigible mast used as a landing spot for the visiting Masters. The people living around the Station inadvertently interact with the colorful fumes and liquids created by the factory's inner workings, which induces sudden bouts of different emotions, from joy to melancholy.

PRIVATE

"Workers wear leather aprons, with thick cloth covering their mouths and noses. They hover over flasks and flames, beakers and condensers. Surly guards patrol the gangways – protecting the method of manufacture as much as the product."

The factory's workings are overseen by the Blithesome Overseer, a rather stressed and cautious individual owning to his close connections to the Masters of the Bazaar, especially Mr Wines with whom he has monthly meetings. The Masters's ultimate plans for the factory's products aren't clear, although some of the easier to produce substances have started to make rounds on the Surface markets. Additionally, it seems that Mr Wines is interested in using the Factory's products to positively influence the growing women's suffrage movement.

One of the Factory's many rooms is marked as 'Communications'; this small, cupboard-sized room contains a brass console filled with many levers and buttons that enables contanct with any of London's other specialized Stations. Curiously, the folder with codes that enable contact with Station I appears to have been stolen, which prompted the overseer of Station VIII to chain the other folders to the desk. Additionaly, a periscope-like device can also be found in the room; it purpose seemingly being the observation of London's skyline from afar.

Station VIII actually started out as only a single room that was personally overseen by one of the Masters. One of the Station's earliest creations, a purified vindictivness in the form a metallic liquid, can still be found in the disused space. Touching it makes one's teeth reflexively gnaw and brings out the feeling of a throat being ripped between one's jaws, which suggest that the substance might have been created from the feelings of a particular Master.

Fillip of Effervescence

The Halcyonic Tonic is a green and gelatinous liquid that invokes the feelings of joy and optimism. It is best consumed with some sweet liquer or a cup of hot chocalate and is particularly enjoyed by those with a sweet tooth. The Tonic's "liquid joy" effect makes it a valuable commodity to the Surface powers that want to placate their restless citizens.

Crystallised Euphoria
"Savage relief. Incomprehensible joy. The softer realisation that Death as a companion is not a metaphor." The Crystallised Euphoria is a colorless crystalline substance that induces a strong feeling of euphoria during consumption. The items used in it's production tend to be associated with a person's first survived Death due to the immense joy and relief that follows such an experience.

Oil of Companionship

"An intense delight built on a bedrock of pleasure caused by caring for another. An entire absence of loneliness." The Oil of Companionship is a thick oil that induces feelings of comraderie and companionship when it's rubbed on a person's skin. A common way to produce the Oil involves the feelings associated with a person hearing their pet, which tends to be a Cat, speak for the first time due to the unique properties of the Neath.

Salve of Righteousness

"Almost burning to the touch. When applied, can cause roaring confidence, a furious joy." The Salve of Righteousness is an orange oil that inspires roaring confidence when applied to the skin. Production of the Salve usually involves items associated with a vindication of religious faith brought about by witnessing certain Neath phenomena, such as the Devils, for the first time. Using a mixture of purified greases and oils as well as an assistance from a Priest, it's possible to remix the Salve into a less viscous and intense version called the Holy Sanguinarine Ointment. This treacle-colored substance smells of incense and can be used to remove boils, warts and untimely doubts, especially those of the religious kind.

A heady mixture. Distillation of Retribution

"A heady mixture. Thrilling, intoxicating and guiltless." The Distillation of Retribution is a heady mixture associated with the feeling of finally having the ability to achieve vengeance. Said mixture can distilled further, creating the Discriminating Aconite, a delicate poison harmful only to those who deserve to feel it's effects. The label of every bottle of the Aconite reads merely "You know what you did".

Concetrate of Self

"The life affirming realisation: not only were you right, but you were right when others had driven you to doubt. A potent liquid – to be dosed carefully." The Concetrate of Self is a peculiar Peligin substance that reaffirms and strenghtens the character of the person that consumes it. The substance is also quite useful in culinary endeavours, where it can be used in small doses to intesify and bring out the dish's unique flavour. The production of the Concetrate usually involves moments that reafirm one's identity and beliefs.

Powder of Renewal

"This induces both yearning and the certain belief that the thing desired for can and will be achieved. Most potent on those with crushed ambitions and dismissed hopes." The Powder of Renewal is a rare, talcum-like powder of reflective scarlet with the ability to restore yearning and hope to an individual, especially those with crushed ambitions and dismissed hopes. It's commonly applied under one's eyelids, although other methods, such as adding it to a drink, are also possible.
