"You're ushered into his office off Mansion's Pyre: a cramped room with a vast desk. He surveys you across that desk. 'Ah yes. The merchant-captain of whom we hear such complicated things.' "[1]
The Dark-Spectacled Admiral is the leader of London's naval fleet, at least what's left of it after Hell was through with it.
Compile a Port Report[edit]
While the Admiral does not have much to work with, he still manages to keep his nation informed and afloat, thanks to the brave zee-captains he hires to assist him. This assistance covers anything from collecting standard port reports of the coming and going of ships to delivering vital intelligence that could change London's fate.[2] The Admiral is a cold and efficient man, and is loyal only to his city.[3]
Station?[edit]
The Admiral is normally levelheaded, but shows concern regarding three things. One is his nearly useless title of Admiral, considering the fact London hardly has a navy for him to lead. Another is Station III - he has his subordinates quickly destroy any evidence regarding its existence.[4]
The last is the use of vital intelligence, as his significant rival (and possibly former intimate) the Voracious Diplomat is competing with him for this information to be used by the New Sequence.[5]
The Admiral wears sunglasses to hide the fact that his eyes... are a very ordinary blue. Unlike all of London's former admirals, he has no love for the Dawn Machine, so his eyes haven't changed color.[3]
Taking Flight[edit]
"And the Performer... I know less, except that he fled from Old London, escaping the wrath of a false god. I remember what he was like when incarcerated - courteous, circumspect, and though he had the bluest eyes you ever saw, he hid them behind dark spectacles. The eyes changed first."[6]
"I'd forgotten this! Reminds me of old times. What will you tell them of me, I wonder?"[7]
The Gallant Reformer, one of the chaplains of Piranesi, hints that the Dark-Spectacled Admiral fled to the High Wilderness to escape the rise of the New Sequence, but wound up in Piranesi himself. Eventually, he transformed into the Glib Performer, arguably the most dangerous of the four chaplains.[6]
