Transit Relays
"A stone edifice, scintillant with sigils, is encased in a contrivance of steel and brass. This is a Singh-Jenkins relay, allowing transport (via a loophole in some cosmic mandate) across the sunless wastes to a far-flung district of heaven."[1]
Transit relays, also called Singh-Jenkins relays after the lost Singh-Jenkins Expedition that developed the first relays,[2] are methods of transportation through the High Wilderness. They are engraved with Correspondence sigils that appear to circumvent cosmic law through some unknown mechanism, allowing locomotives to jump to other parts of space.[3] The work of the Singh-Jenkins Expedition was used to establish further relays.[4]
As of 1905, there are relays linking the Reach to Albion (from Port Prosper[5] to Brabazon Workworld[6]), Eleutheria (from the vicinity of Hybras to Eagle's Empyrean[7]), and the Blue Kingdom (from the vicinity of New Winchester to Sky Barnet). The Empyreal control the Eleutheria relay,[7] and the Blue Kingdom controls their own relay.[8] There is a second relay between the Reach and Eleutheria, located near Achlys, which is broken.[9]
It would be fair to call transit relays wyrmholes; they follow the paths of the Burrower Below,[10] and using them frequently carries a risk of drawing her ire.[11][12]
