"She has given her clay man confidante the slip, tonight. She studies your face closely, her eyes green behind her spectacles. 'You are what you say you are, aren't you? I've had my fill of monsters.'"[1]

Sophia Kincaid is an accomplished Officer of the Department of Menace Eradication and, in her spare time, the founder and leader of a club devoted to hunting monsters.

She Who Hunts Monsters[edit | edit source]

"The lady in the sensible green dress and the sensible black shoes rounds the corner of Lacewhisper Street at foolhardy speed. The collision knocks you both to the ground, where a strand of her auburn hair tickles your cheek. "Sorry," she says, scrambling up. "Can't stop. Monsters." She rushes off. In her haste, she has forgotten her umbrella. Department-issue. The label reads: 'Property of the D.M.E., allocated to licensed Eradication Officer 442-A: Kincaid, Sophia'."[2]

Sophia is a young woman with green eyes behind a pair of spectacles,[3] auburn hair, a preference for a green dress with black shoes, and rarely seen without her Department-issued umbrella.[4] Tirelessly pursuing dangerous quarry, she lives for the thrill of the hunt.[5] A veteran monster-hunter, her knowledge of monstrous anatomy is among the most extensive in London.[6]

Soap, the Restless Clay Man.

Sophia is a licensed Eradication Officer (Code 442/A) with the Department of Menace Eradication. Her long-time partner is Soap, a Clay Man and fellow licensed Officer (Code 467/C), who accompanies her on many hunts.[7] He wears an overcoat,[8] and although he appears to be a typical Clay Man, Soap insists he is Unfinished.[9] The two have known each other for over a decade,[10] and Sophia seems to have played a role in freeing Soap from the services of Mr Fires.[11][12] One of their adventures is chronicled in the official Fallen London comic A Pinch of Snuff.

When not engaged in the Eradication of Menaces, Sophia oversees a club of the same pursuit.[13][14] Her vision for the club is one defined not by wealth or exclusivity but by the quality of the work its members accomplish.[15]

Sophia's[edit | edit source]

"Sophia's is a private club catering to the monster-hunters who find London's other clubs soporific. The dinners are hearty, the conversation robust. You may pursue joining the Club at the Bazaar Side-streets."[16]

The Dauntless Temperance Campaigner

Sophia's offers a lively haven for monster-hunters who find other London establishments too dull. Over tea and biscuits, members debate politics, recount their most recent hunts, and generally arm themselves for whatever danger comes next.[17][18] Most are heavily armed at all times, and the club maintains a well-stocked armory in its basement.[19] Prospective applicants may contribute supplies to this armory to earn an invitation.[20]

Another path to membership is through aiding the club's charitable endeavors spearheaded by the Dauntless Temperance Campaigner,[21] which provides relief to the underclasses of London.[22][23] The club also hosts seminars featuring guest experts on a variety of political, martial and monstrous matters.[24]
