"A fledgling colony trying to dig its fingernails deep enough into the spongy, fungal fabric of the Reach to cling on when hard times come. It is a sad truth that many more settlements are founded than flourish."

Hybras could perhaps be considered the Uttershroom of the Reach, an isolated colony built amongst giant fungus-ridden Bronzewood logs.

"Growth asks no licence"

"Life moves slowly here. There are arguments over the rules of bowls, and the correct amount of time to steep tea. The Station Master seems to avoid the villagers. There is an unusual unique quality to the starlight which filters through the underside of the caps."

Hybras seems to be something of a dismal, sleepy retirement town in space. Many of its residents are octogenarians, and despite the rampant fungus, Blemmigans, and the giant ants, the colonists in Hybras are unusually welcoming compared to the more common kind of settlers that live in homesteads. They would often serves tea and invite guests to a game of bowls.

The Wizened Mayor claimed that the reason that they are staying in Hybras is because they are enjoying a "second youth": The settlers of Hybras were workers from the Brabazon Workworld that entered the Workworld as a young people. Their old age is the result of the Workworld time acceleration, and they are spending their remaining time in the idyllic settlement of Hybras.
