I want to suggest that a real-life parralel for the Jovial Contrarian is the wheel-chair-bound French Revolution figure Georges Auguste Couthon. In addition to being a revolutionary in a wheel-chair, Couthon was both noted for being a very effective speaker and for changing positions quite often while still being among the top of the Revolutionary leadership. He ended up being guillotined alongside Robespierre. The only thing that makes me hesitate is that Couthon is a century too early, but other than that the parallels are very convincing, I think.
