"Something twinkles within the dark window of the Neither as it leaches away. The star-spread of a night sky, interrupted by a canopy of leaves. A far-off jungle; dark fruits and many-fingered creatures sway in the trees. You tear yourself from the porthole, and when you look again, it is all gone."

Neither are extremely mysterious creatures that roam the depths of the Unterzee. Upon dying, their bodies liquefy into murk;[1] any divers who approach these remains are consumed by the darkness and instantly killed, leaving nothing behind.[2] Shining a light upon a Neither's death-shadow reveals strange visions which vanish as soon as one looks away: unfamiliar skies, and a jungle populated by "hostile birds" and "many-fingered creatures."[3][4]
