Description

Jervaise serves as the majordomo to Mr Wines, one of The Masters of the Bazaar.[1] How exactly he came into their service remains a mystery, though it likely ties to his wife's pursuit of the Name.

Once a simple fisherman[2][3] on Mutton Island, he and his wife ran the Cock and Magpie before becoming entangled with the Masters.[4] Like his wife[5], Jervaise is a smoker.[6][7] He has ties to the Drownies[8] but harbors a distaste for eating Rubbery Lumps.[9]

Marriage

Jervaise is married to Mrs Plenty[10], and the two share a fondness for bickering.[11] Like any long marriage, theirs has seen its fair share of rocky periods. Mr. Wines is well aware of this, occasionally stepping in as their marriage counselor.[12] Despite their conflicts, Jervaise has been a source of support for his wife, particularly in helping her recover from a certain quest[13]—though the experience has left him with deep mental scars.[14][15] However, his devotion is not absolute; he frequently visits the Parlour of Virtue, where his encounters with Sinning Jenny go beyond professional courtesies.[16]

Fruits of the Zee Festival of 1899

Following the events of The Grand Clearing-Out, Mr Wines sent Jervaise to Mutton Island in order to collect love stories–particularly ones of tempests and tragedy.[17] Despite already being married, Jervaise was willing to provide material for these stories himself.[18]
