"A vast, broken dome soars over the jungle. Here, a fragment has fallen from the dome and embedded itself in the earth like a monolith. You step closer. It is a single scale of smoky jade, higher than you are tall. "In the dome's blue shadow, the jungle floor is littered with bones. Cat skulls are piled in staring mounds. The scattered vertebrae of serpents crunch underfoot."[1]

The Dome of Scales is a contested landmark in Parabola.

A Key Battleground

The exact features of this enormous jade dome[2][3] shift depending on who is controlling it.[3][4][5] Under the control of the Fingerkings, the snakes hide in the foliage around it, and its peak is crowned by the golden coils of an especially giant dream-serpent who is referred to as the Serpent of the Dome.[3][6] Under the control of the Cats, it is adorned by a pair of bronze gates engraved with various feline feats.[4] And under the control of the Red-Handed Queen, most dramatically, the Dome's surface is adorned with rubies and the area around it is transformed from soil and vegetation to silk and velvet; the Queen herself also sits on a throne in front of it while her courtiers mill about.[7] The only constant of the Dome of Scales is that the Skin of the Sun hangs in the sky above it.

Although the scales of the Dome denote it as a construction of the Fingerkings,[2] within the Dome, through the aforementioned bronze gates, is the entrance to the Palatinate of Cats - a grand estate that the cats fight to control.[4]
