Khan's Shadow

From The Fifth City Wiki

"Conniving, debauching, speechifying, drinking, singing, speeching, poeting. Now and then a drunken duel. Very occasionally, a savage ritual murder."[1]

Khan's Shadow is one of the three settlements of the Khanate.

The City on the Waves

"So many malcontents. So little time."[1]

Khan's Shadow is a city largely composed of decommissioned ships, inhabited by the Khanate's exiles, pirates, and other lost folk.[2] These miscreants are called Shadows,[3] and they primarily spend their days plotting, drinking, and occasionally engaging in duels and ritualistic murders.[1] Khan's Shadow is also home to several shipwrights and Monster-Hunters, and some leaders of the Shadow have an interest in the Dawn Machine.[4][5]

History

"Long ago, the Khanate turned its back on its warrior traditions. It has no place for pirates and would-be nomads: so here, in the Shadow, the exiles make their home, amid a hundred wrecked, grounded, decommissioned ships."[2]

Khans' Shadow was built when the leadership of the Khanate rejected its warrior traditions from the time of old Mongolia and the Fourth City. Those who could not abide by these reforms were promptly banished from the Khanate's new society.[2]

In the present day, the people of Khan's Heart consider the Shadows petulant fools.[6] In return, the Shadows have taken on anarchist inclinations, and though they lack allies,[7] they fervently plot their next moves against the regimes that rejected them.[8]
