Content Guidelines and Spoiler Policy

This wiki is intended to be a resource and reference so fans of the Fallen London 'verse, both new and experienced, can gain a better understanding of the setting's various concepts and characters that may seem confusing as first glance.

Below is an introduction to the wiki's writing style, guidelines, and important templates and tools. After reading this article, you should have a good idea of how the wiki works and what we expect content-wise, and we thank you in advance for any contributions and hope you enjoy your stay!

Article Content

Unlike our counterpart, the Fallen London Wiki, we do not specialize in gameplay details or storyline spoilers. So while we may provide background info on a certain story or its characters, we will not spoil how the storyline ends, what "routes" the player can take, or what in-game rewards it offers. In a nutshell, events in any stories that are dependent on the player's actions are considered "open possibilities"; that is, they have not happened yet, but, in some cases, could happen. Furthermore, we will not cover gameplay mechanics like combat systems, player progression, or statistical information.

The primary focus of this wiki is providing background information on the various facets of the Fallen London, Sunless Sea, and Sunless Skies settings. Therefore, articles will be primarily focused on characters and events that are not dependent on the player's actions, unless said actions provide more info or perspective on the topic's background. Stylistically speaking, the player character should not be mentioned in any capacity, and writers should avoid using first or second person in relation to the players or readers as well.

Make sure that any and all information on an article is cited, no matter how minor the detail may seem. If you add a claim that lacks a citation, it may be removed, edited, or given the [citation needed] tag. Furthermore, if you see a piece of info that is unverified, feel free to cite it, or add a [citation needed] tag (using the {{fact}} template) if it cannot be verified. If you need help citing something, the editors will be happy to assist you.

Do note that the wiki is currently under a period of restructuring and revision, so not every article may abide by these guidelines. If you notice an article is inadequately cited or isn't written according to our guidelines, feel free to revise it, leave a comment, or contact us!

Spoiler Policy

We do allow spoilers from most paid content, but they must be marked accordingly with the appropriate spoiler tag (see below). Furthermore, we do not allow unaltered text-dumps copied and pasted from the games themselves or any other archives. If you want to cover a specific story's contents, paraphrase: you should only have a a few sentences worth of quoted text at most. This is a major difference from the gameplay-oriented Fallen London Wiki, which does not spoil Fate-locked or any other restricted content in any capacity.

There are, however, certain stories that cannot be spoiled or discussed no matter what:

• Datamined or leaked content from any Failbetter game. They ruin the fun and are dubiously canon anyway.
• Any Fallen London story that Failbetter has restricted from being discussed in a public context. These include:
  • Secrets Framed in Gold, and by extension:
    • The Repentant Forger
    • The Passion Destiny
  • The Wry Functionary's Fate-locked storyline
  • "SMENdings" (community shorthand for the endings of Seeking Mr Eaten's Name)
  • A certain path of Where You and I Must Go
  • Ambition: Enigma (which isn't story-oriented anyways)

Citations

Citations are a very important aspect of wiki curation, so any new contributions should have them by default. Here the template for how to cite the Fallen London, Sunless Sea, or Sunless Skies wikis:

• Citation is the name of the template and should not be changed.

• url is the direct link to the source. Do not link to FL profile echo text; link the to corresponding wiki page instead. If the content is in Fate-locked storyline, link to the storyline's intro page on the wiki instead.

• title is the name of the storylet or option that results in the text you want to cite. This field makes finding the specific text much easier, if it is used as accurately as possible.

• source is simply the source from which the text is cited from, such as a game like Fallen London or a website like Twitter or Wikipedia.

• quoted text should only be used if the text cited in url link does not contain the pertinent info which supports the claim made on the wiki.

• You can automatically generate citations for the Fallen London gameplay wiki by using this link: Fallen London Citation Generator. By copy-and-pasting a link from the FL wiki into the box, you can automatically create a citation based on the template above; just be sure to wrap your citation in <ref><ref/> tags when you're done. Note that this tool does not currently support the Sunless gameplay wikis at this time.

Image Policy

Any and all images must be uploaded with the appropriate source and licensing. For most images, this is done by adding the following to the image page's source code by using the "Edit source" option:

You can also use {{FL image}}, {{Sea image}}, and {{Skies image}} in the source code of images to add the applicable citation automatically.

Spoiler Tags

Spoiler tags are used to warn readers of potential storyline spoilers, which will not be obscured or censored text-wise in any way beyond the notification. Each tag corresponds to a different "level" of spoiler: from middle-game spoilers, given grey spoiler tags, to spoilers about late-game or Fate-locked storylines, given red spoiler tags. Please make sure that any spoilers in articles are given the appropriate spoiler tag if necessary, and please be mindful of them if reading spoilers is not your cup of tea.

Generally speaking, information that can be easily gleaned by newcomers to a game or storyline need not be marked with a spoiler tag, but please bear in mind that what may be "common knowledge" to certain readers may be earth-shattering to other readers. When in doubt, it's probably best to add a tag more often than not.

The syntax for adding any of the following spoiler tags is {{template name}} in source editing mode.

Spoilers

An example of a spoiler tag. Use this for any information related to midgame content, which would not be easily learned by beginner players or those starting a specific story. However, content related to the endings of storylines should be given the major spoiler tag; see below.

Major Spoilers

An example of a major spoiler tag. Use this for any information related to endgame content, such as the endings of major storylines or world-shaking revelations, as well as for Fate-locked content (remember, you cannot copy-and-paste entire text dumps verbatim). If you notice, this tag is a bit larger than the others, and for good reason. Use this tag at the top of articles only, use the smaller major spoiler tag otherwise.
