"And then, hidden in a glimmering crevice, you see it: a Second City Palace, blue as the Ishtar Gate. Around it a river of serpents rises: the Writhing River."[1]
The Palace of the Rising is a grand, lapis-blue[2][3] fortress in Parabola, located on the banks of the Writhing River.[4] Built by the Obstinate Adoratrice and her sisters, it was meant to allow the people of the Second City to live beneath sunlight once more, free from the Masters and the Echo Bazaar.[5][6] However, their plans collapsed before they could be realized, as the Masters escaped their imprisonment sooner than expected. Some of the sisters were forced to flee, and the Palace was left unfinished and abandoned.[7] The Adoratrice remains there, and has become its sole architect.[8]
The Palace is a triple-walled complex containing six chambers, which radiate outward from a central garden.[3] Five of these, possibly dedicated to five of the sisters, now lie dormant; only the innermost is occupied, as the location of the Adoratrice's throne.[9] In an unfinished corner, still built of ordinary sandstone, the Adoratrice has stored the ushabtiu[10] that allowed her subjects to roam Parabola in an eternal dream.[11][12]
