Often among Zee captains, citizens of the Fallen Cities, and inhuman beings all practice a wide variety of religions and odd practices. From cannibalism to "good Christian thrashings" men and women have done a variety of terrible, stupid, or downright evil things for their gods and beliefs. Some of these religions actually have value, and their gods affect the people of the Zee in many ways. Others are...well there is no good explanation, even by their own followers.
The Zee is full of things men and women can barely even comprehend. On the Surface sailors were always superstitious people with tall tales of supernatural entities helping or hindering them on their travels. On the Zee its no different, but they may actually hold some truth.

Gods of the Zee

The Zee is full of things men and women can barely even comprehend. On the Surface sailors were always superstitious people with tall tales of supernatural entities helping or hindering them on their travels. On the Zee its no different, but they may actually hold some truth.

The Zee Three; Salt, Stone, and Storm

The city folk and islanders can worship whatever silly god they please, to the Zee captains and their crew only three matter most, as they have formed a legitimate impact on the travels of men and women who enter their domain. Sometimes it will be an act of good will, a reward for behaving in their domain, other times the will curse you, which have dire, unexpected side effects on poor Zee-farers.

Salt

Time and memory, these are the domains of the Zee god Salt. The flowing currents, the waves that erode even shore lines, change and the flow of time affect us all. Salt is the embodiment of the Zee itself. Salt is an entity of unknown origin, though it is believed he may exist far to the east, father than any man may dare go.

"We will sail East, and the islands will fall behind. The zee will be troubled by greater waves. The false-stars will pale, until the Neath-roof grows invisible above. New scents will prickle the air: something like spice and something like pine."

-The Sun beneath the Sea event in Sunless Sea

Salt's influence affects all travelers of the Zee. In time, the Zee will change, as will you. If you manage to gain it's attention Salt may reward you when you enter one of his domains or perhaps if you gaze upon the Zee he will reveal things to you, as you recollect about how things have changed. If you, however, decide to defy Salt be warned. Time is it's domain, and Salt's Curse can affect you in the most devastating of ways. He can undo past achievements, take away the one's you love the most, your very history might be altered as a punishment. be watchful of his messenger, the White Bat, as if it is watching you, HE is watching.

Storm

And ancient anger, Storm's wrath is unending and punishing to those who gain his attention. Storm is the embodiment of the air, weather, and ceiling of his domain. He is the punishment, the judgement, of all beings who sail the Zee.

"Now and then, rocky fragments fall from the roof of the Neath. The decks of older ships are pocked with scars. The sound is one no land-lubber knows, and no zailor will ever forget. This one has smashed the glass of a deck-binnacle. "Ill omen!" one sailor cries. "The god in the roof! Storm is angry!"

-The Gods of the Zee: Storm's Attention

Storm is a god in which you cannot win his favor entirely. His attention often fuels the anger and rage within men. Some captains who gain his attention find one of their crew attacking others with insane bloodlust after an event with the roof of the Zee affects the ship. Other times, however, gazing out to Zee, the captain will find new strength and vision from his guidance. Be wary of it's dispeasure, as Storm's Curse is relentless as a storm...quite literally. Zailors with it's Curse notice a disturbing increase to storms while traveling and fogs seem to follow and grow wherever they go. A simple, yet dangerous curse that haunts captains wherever they go.

Stone

Stone is the God most familiar and known origin of the Zee three. Stone was the child of the Sun and the Bazaar, an entity of healing, home, and life itself. Stone's domain is all the solid land on the Zee, with the Elder Continent being Stone's realm. Deep within the continent lies the Mountain of Light, Stone.

"It's very far away; but perhaps it's watching you."

-The Gods of the Zee: Stone's Attention

Stone's influence is in the lives all people in the Zee have. In fact, there is very strong correlations with the Zee people's ungodly long lives and the unnatural existence of such beings as the citizens of Polythreme and the Presbyterate have something to do with Stone. Stone is also the parent of one of the Zee's most fearsome beasts, the wandering Mt.Nomad. Gaining Stone's attention may make you healthier and agile, representing it's embodiment of health and eternity. Stone's Curse, however...actually does nothing it seems. Perhaps Stone's Curse is the eternity Zee folk must endure, perhaps it's the fact that those who live outside the Elder Continent can never enter, not without their souls burning away and entire ship's crews dying. Perhaps it simply works in a way we cannot understand, or have yet to see the full repercussions of the curse. No matter what Stone is perhaps the most impacting and influential God on the Zee. Be wary of surprise bits of stone and even diamond showing up unaccounted for on the ship, it may mean Stone's attention is on you.
