Maybe's Daughter is a whimsical and many-tattooed[2] engineer. Despite her outwards appearance, she is very serious when it comes to engineering - a skill in which she is very knowledgeable[3]. She also has a penchant for taking things which are not exactly 'hers', though she is not opposed to sharing in her spoils[4][5][6].
A Complicated Ancestry
"She sighs. 'My family is very, very complicated. I don't like any of them.'"[7]
The Daughter's mother is the Lady in Lilac[8], Mr Clathermont's estranged wife, though she and her are not close, and in fact have never met[7]. She was born out of wedlock, from an affair her mother had with a Parabolan tiger-count[9], which makes Maybe's Daughter a countess. She herself was born in the land beyond mirrors[10], and her aunt on her father's side is a Parabolan Panther[11].
Despite never having met her, she seems to know much about her mother, including her dealing with the Bazaar, and her knowledge of the Great Signs[12]. The Daughter even seems to possess secrets about the Bazaar herself...
Now, she seeks to find her mother by traveling across the Unterzee[13]. She has narrowed it down to seven ports: Whither, the Isle of Cats, Irem, the Chelonate, Khan's Shadow, Port Carnelian, or Naples.
