"The Mourn is a stalagmite vast as a crag, and its foot has no safe harbours. The corsair's citadel nestles halfway up. An intricate system of winches takes the strain... and your ship rises slowly from the zee. Her hull creaks in protest. Grizzled zailors groan and cling to stanchions."[1]
Gaider's Mourn is a pirate citadel, located in the heart of the Corsair's Forest in the Unterzee.
Pirate's Paradise
"Higher, higher. Now the Unterzee shimmers like glass below."[1]
Build halfway across a gigantic stalagmite, the Mourn teems with all sorts of pirates, smugglers and other individuals of dubious reputation.[2] Due to its precarious location, it has no safe harbors for ships, so any visiting vessels are slowly raised high into the air from zee-level using a complicated winch system, before being safely secured in cradles.[1]
The most notable establishment in the Mourn is a drinking-den called the Arrant Limpet,[3] which notably serves an extremely hard drink called Red Ruin.[4] While the den accepts visitors of any stripe, visitors of a "respectable" quality are unfortunately treated with suspicion here.[5] Because the Mourn tends to attract people with a... certain kind of temperament, brutal fights break out quite frequently,[3] and their danger is magnified many times by the Mourn's narrow walkways and high altitude. As such, these fights have a "staccato quality," and the best combatants use hit-and-run tactics and other dirty tricks.[6]
Just Business
"Gaider's Mourn swarms with pirates, smugglers and captains of uncertain allegiance. You could learn a lot here, but you'll need to go carefully."[7]
Since it lies at the center of the treacherous Corsair's Forest, Gaider's Mourn is a popular place to send smuggled ships, especially those captured from defeated crews.[8] Gaider's Mourn's status as a free port also means that many different groups from across the zee mingle together, making the port a great place to gather intelligence on the zee's various factions;[3][9] groups that visit the Mourn regularly include hunters from the Chelonate and secretive zailors from the Khanate.[10] The corsairs of the Mourn loathe spies, however, and discovering one may lead to brutality even more extreme than usual.[9]
