"The Eldest Daughter struggles with some of the mathematics. [...] The intent of the work deeply appeals to her, though. "It is the Science of Escape," she tells you."[1]

The term "Red Science" is itself ambiguous. In the broader sense, it denotes the investigation of the metaphysical order of the universe,[2][3] and how to manipulate it.[4] In its narrower, more maligned sense, it is applied to its more questionable uses in breaking the Great Chain of Being and other laws of the Judgements. Regardless, it involves the application of the principles of the Correspondence to reality.[5]

The Science of Escape

The principal application of the Red Science is in warping reality, in some way - though any responsible Crimson Engineer would use this to undo anomalies, rather than create them. It is capable of manipulating spacetime,[6][7][8] rewriting the rules of mathematics,[9] and defying gravity on a local scale.[10] It may also be used to study more benign principles, such as the relation between light and law.[11]

The Red Science can also be used to modify flesh and violate the Great Chain of Being. However, such breaks in the natural order always leave a scar,[12] and, like all transgressions of their laws, the Judgements see this as a crime.[13]
