"It drips eagerly. Perhaps if it comes to your cabin you should put down some sort of matting."

The Nacreous Outcast is a Rubbery Man with a strange scar on its face. Exceptionally for its kind, it can speak English,[1] cook,[2] and perform religious rituals.[3]

A Star-Crossed Creature

The Outcast is unwelcome among its fellow Rubberies on account of multiple crimes. It won't speak of most of these, but among them was love, which is forbidden within the species; the recipient of its affection might have been a Fluke.[4][5] As further punishment, it was abandoned in Port Cecil, where it became a servant to the Principles of Coral.[2] The phosphorescent scar on its forehead might have been caused by scintillack produced by the Principles.[6]

The Outcast has been forced to gather materials to prepare for a chess match against a lucky opponent; since the Principles is not exactly able to play chess, the Outcast is to serve as a surrogate for its master. If the Principles loses the match, it will die or descend the Great Chain of Being, an outcome it desires[7] - but the Outcast will share its fate.[6] If the Principles loses, the Outcast will be freed.[8]
