"Lytton. He was more than our financier. He was our courage. He inspired us when we faltered."[1]

Lytton is a former verger (church administrator) and idealist, who financed the Seven Against Nidah.[2] Working alongside his wife, the Fierce Philanthropist,[3] his fundraising efforts were vital to the quest for immortality. The pair took donations from bankers, nobles, and anyone else with money and a lust for eternity.[4]

After the failure of the Seven, he fled to Low Barnet, where his entire lower half has been encased in coral and has been merged with the wall of the church. Broken, Lytton has given up on his quest; he wouldn't be able to continue even if he tried, given his current condition.[5] He was determined for his wife to replace him in the Seven in the event of his demise.[6]

  2. Ask him about the Seven, Sunless Sea "“We were the Seven Against Nidah... soldiers, spies, healers, zailors. We meant to democratise death; to break Nidah's hold on immortality and distribute their hoard of years more evenly. It was a good scheme.""
  3. The Financier, Sunless Sea "You remind her that he wants no further part in the endeavour. "Yes. But he has told us who should replace him." She clicks open the locket. The face of the Fierce Philanthropist looks out. "
  4. What was his role in the Seven?, Sunless Sea "“I came from modest means. However, my congregation consisted of industrialists, the gentry, bankers... People with an interest in immortality and the willingness to invest. My doctrine was unconventional - eternal life in this life, not the next.”"
  5. Deliver his wife's locket, Sunless Sea "He looks down at the gradual encroachment of coral. “I cannot return - for her safety, as well as the obvious. But I ask that you withhold the full nature of my condition from her. I wouldn't want to cause her further distress.”"
