The Tracklayer's Union, founded and led by Furnace Ancona,[1] is the guild of workers responsible for building the Moloch Line railroad and the Great Hellbound Railway. They are divided into three factions, each with their own views and goals: the Liberationists, the Prehistoricists, and the Emancipationists.[2]
The Liberationists are in step with the revolutionary parties who seek the Liberation of Night: the destruction of all laws, including the laws of nature.[3][4] Their most prominent advocate is January, a member of the Calendar Council.[5]
The Prehistoricists seek to use the Shapeling Arts to create creatures that will help laborers and fill what they perceive as gaps in the Great Chain of Being.[6] The founder of the Prehistoricists, and their most important thinker, is Cornelius.[7]
The Emancipationists seek to be a pragmatic faction not tied to any ideology. Their aims are twofold. The first is simply to support any initiative that would improve the health and well-being of tracklayers and other rail workers. The second is the creation of a workers' utopia in the form of a city in The Hinterlands, away from the Masters' influence.[8][9] Furnace Ancona is their de facto representative.[1]
