The Tracklayer's Union is the guild of workers responsible for building the Moloch Street railroad and the Great Hellbound Railway. They are divided into three revolutionary factions: the Liberationists, the Prehistoricists, and the Emancipationists.[1]
The Liberationists seek the Liberation of Night: the destruction of all laws, including the laws of nature.[2][3] Their most prominent advocate is January, a member of the Calendar Council.[4]
The Prehistoricists seek to use the Shapeling Arts to create creatures that will help laborers and fill what they perceive as gaps in The Great Chain of Being.[5] The founder of the Prehistoricists, and their most important thinker, is Cornelius.[6]
The Emancipationists seek to be a pragmatic faction not tied to any ideology. Their aims are twofold. The first is simply to support any initiative that would ameliorate the health and survival of workers in the near future. The second is the creation of a worker utopia in the form of a city in The Hinterlands, away from the Masters.[7][8] Their de facto representative is Furnace Ancona, the first leader of the Union.[9]
