''A courier in sombre livery approaches you in the street to hand you a note bearing the seal of [[User:KestrelGirl|Mr Feathers]]. It reads: 'You are about to post a spoiler. Take precautions.'''
Our goal at the Fifth City Wiki is to be a resource for fans of the ''Fallen London/Sunless'' universe, serving as both a reference and a primer for the setting and characters.

This wiki is intended to be a resource and reference so fans of the ''Fallen London'' 'verse, both new and experienced, can gain a better understanding of the setting's various concepts and characters that may seem confusing as first glance.

Below is an introduction to the wiki's writing style, guidelines, and important templates and tools. After reading this article, you should have a good idea of how the wiki works and what we expect content-wise, and we thank you in advance for any contributions and hope you enjoy your stay!

== Article Content==
Unlike our counterpart, the [https://fallenlondon.fandom.com/ ''Fallen London'' Wiki], '''we do not specialize in gameplay details or storyline spoilers'''. So while we may provide background info on a certain story or its characters, we will '''not''' spoil how the storyline ends, what "routes" the player can take, or what in-game rewards it offers. In a nutshell, events in any stories that are dependent on the player's actions are considered "'''open possibilities'''"; that is, they '''have not happened yet''', but, in some cases, '''could happen'''. Furthermore, we will not cover gameplay mechanics like combat systems, player progression, or statistical information.

The primary focus of this wiki is providing '''background information''' on the various facets of the ''Fallen London'', ''Sunless Sea'', and ''Sunless Skies'' settings. Therefore, articles will be primarily focused on characters and events that are not dependent on the player's actions, unless said actions provide more info or perspective on the topic's background. Stylistically speaking, the player character should not be mentioned in any capacity, and writers should avoid using first or second person in relation to the players or readers as well.
This wiki aims to provide background information on the setting and characters of the Neath, the High Wilderness, the Surface, and beyond.  Our gameplay-related counterparts are the [https://fallenlondon.wiki/wiki/Fallen_London_Wiki/ ''Fallen London'' Wiki], [https://sunlesssea.miraheze.org ''Sunless Sea'' Wiki], the [https://sunlessskies.miraheze.org ''Sunless Skies'' Wiki], and the [https://maskoftherose.miraheze.org ''Mask of the Rose'' Wiki]. Topics beyond the wiki's scope include:

Make sure that '''any and all''' information on an article is '''[[Content_Guidelines_and_Spoilers#Citations|cited]]''', no matter how minor the detail may seem. If you add a claim that lacks a citation, it may be removed, edited, or given the [citation needed] tag. Furthermore, if you see a piece of info that is unverified, feel free to cite it, or add a [citation needed] tag (using the <nowiki>{{fact}}</nowiki> template) if it cannot be verified. If you need help citing something, the editors will be happy to assist you.
* In-game options and routes
* In-game rewards
* Any other gameplay mechanics that do not convey story

Do note that the wiki is currently under a period of restructuring and revision, so not every article may abide by these guidelines. If you notice an article is inadequately cited or isn't written according to our guidelines, feel free to revise it, leave a comment, or contact us!
Given the emphasis on background, the player character should not be mentioned in any capacity, and actions by the player should not be covered. Writers should avoid using first or second person to refer to the reader or player, though we do have exceptions for the sake of single-page in-character gimmicks.

== Spoiler Policy ==
Consider an article detailing a settlement on the brink of war:

We do allow spoilers from ''most'' paid content, but they '''must be marked accordingly with the appropriate spoiler tag''' (see below). Furthermore, we '''do not allow unaltered text-dumps copied and pasted from the games themselves or any other archives'''. If you want to cover a specific story's contents, '''paraphrase''': you should only have a a '''few sentences''' worth of quoted text '''at most'''. This is a major difference from the gameplay-oriented ''Fallen London'' Wiki, which does not spoil Fate-locked or any other restricted content in any capacity.
*<font color="green">Good:</font> discussing the factions involved, and the politics that caused tensions to rise.

There are, however, certain stories that '''cannot be spoiled or discussed no matter what''':
*<font color="red">Not good:</font> discussing how the player may resolve or escalate the conflict.
* Datamined or leaked content from any Failbetter game. They ruin the fun and are dubiously canon anyway.
* Any ''Fallen London'' story that Failbetter has restricted from being discussed in a public context. These include:
** ''Secrets Framed in Gold'', and by extension:
*** The Repentant Forger
*** The Passion Destiny
** The Wry Functionary's Fate-locked storyline
** "SMENdings" (community shorthand for the endings of ''Seeking Mr Eaten's Name'')
** A certain path of ''Where You and I Must Go''
** ''Ambition: Enigma'' (which isn't story-oriented anyways)

== Citations ==
'''Citations are paramount''': they are the wiki's lifeblood, no matter how trivial. Any claims that lack citing may be removed, edited, or marked with {{fact}}.
Citations are a '''very''' important aspect of wiki curation, so any new contributions should have them by default. Here the template for how to cite the ''Fallen London'', ''Sunless Sea'', or ''Sunless Skies'' wikis:

<nowiki><ref>{{Citation|url|title|source|}} ''"quoted text"''</ref></nowiki>
Note that the wiki is currently being restructured and revised, so not every article may abide by these guidelines.

==Citations==
Any contributions should be cited where applicable.

Citation template:

<code><nowiki><ref>{{Citation|url|title|source|}} ''"quoted text"''</ref></nowiki></code>

*'''Citation''' is the name of the template and should not be changed.
*'''Citation''' is the name of the template and should not be changed.

*'''url''' is the direct link to the source. Do not link to FL profile echo text; link the to corresponding wiki page instead. If the content is in Fate-locked storyline, link to the storyline's intro page on the wiki instead.
*'''url''' is the direct link to the source, often a ''Fallen London'', ''Sunless Sea'', or ''Sunless Skies'' wiki page.

*'''title''' is the name of the storylet or option that results in the text you want to cite. This field makes finding the specific text much easier, if it is used as accurately as possible.
*'''title''' is the name of the storylet or option with which the text can be easily found.

*'''source''' is simply the source from which the text is cited from, such as a game like ''Fallen London'' or a website like Twitter or Wikipedia.
* '''source''' is where the text is cited from, such as a game like ''Fallen London'' or a website like Twitter or Wikipedia.

*'''quoted text''' should only be used if the text cited in url link does not contain the pertinent info which supports the claim made on the wiki.
*'''quoted text''' is ''extremely important'' and should ''always'' be included. Please truncate quoted text if the cited text is longer than a few sentences.

*You can automatically generate citations for the ''Fallen London'' gameplay wiki by using this link: [https://fl-citation-gen.tumblr.com/ ''Fallen London'' Citation Generator]. By copy-and-pasting a link from the FL wiki into the box, you can automatically create a citation based on the template above; just be sure to wrap your citation in <nowiki><ref><ref/></nowiki> tags when you're done. Note that this tool does not currently support the ''Sunless'' gameplay wikis at this time.

Spoilers from paid in-game content are allowed, ''provided that:''
*Any discussion is under an appropriate spoiler tag
*Quoted text is kept to a minimum

== Spoiler Tags ==
This is a major difference from the ''Fallen London'' Wiki, which does not spoil Fate-locked story content. Note that text dumps copied straight from the games, or datamined or leaked content from any Failbetter game, are not allowed and will be removed.
Spoiler tags are used to warn readers of potential storyline spoilers, which will not be obscured or censored text-wise in any way beyond the notification. Each tag corresponds to a different "level" of spoiler: from middle-game spoilers, given grey spoiler tags, to spoilers about late-game or Fate-locked storylines, given red spoiler tags. Please make sure that any spoilers in articles are given the appropriate spoiler tag if necessary, and please be mindful of them if reading spoilers is not your cup of tea.

Generally speaking, information that can be easily gleaned by newcomers to a game or storyline need not be marked with a spoiler tag, but please bear in mind that what may be "common knowledge" to certain readers may be earth-shattering to other readers. When in doubt, it's probably best to add a tag more often than not.
As of a July 2023 revision to Failbetter's spoiler policy, there is no currently prohibited content from any Failbetter game on this wiki. Any previously prohibited content will be discussed under one of the major spoiler warnings.
==Image Policy==
Please ensure that you have permission to use any images you are uploading to the wiki. Images not published by Failbetter must either be in the public domain, have a Creative Commons license that allows for copying and distribution, or be explicitly provided for wiki use by the creator. As noted above, we prohibit the use of AI image generation for wiki purposes.

The syntax for adding any of the following spoiler tags is <nowiki>{{template name}}</nowiki> in source editing mode.
When you upload an image, credit the source and include a licensing tag. The templates <code><nowiki>{{FL image}}</nowiki></code>, <code><nowiki>{{Sea image}}</nowiki></code>, <code><nowiki>{{Skies image}}</nowiki></code>, <code><nowiki>{{MotR image}}</nowiki></code>, and <code><nowiki>{{ST image}}</nowiki></code> can be added to image pages to automatically credit game assets and indicate fair use.  These templates are applicable for ''Fallen London'', ''Sunless Sea'', ''Sunless Skies'', ''Mask of the Rose'', and ''The Silver Tree'', respectively.

=== Spoilers ===
==Spoiler Tags ==
An example of a spoiler tag. Use this for any information related to '''midgame content''', which would not be easily learned by beginner players or those starting a specific story. However, content related to the ''endings'' of storylines should be given the major spoiler tag; see below.
Spoiler tags are used to signal information that players may not want to learn outside of gameplay. Spoilers are broadly not obscured or censored beyond the notification. Remember that player experience can vary: when in doubt, add a tag.

'''Template name: "spoiler"'''
All spoiler tags are templates with the syntax <code><nowiki>{{template name}}</nowiki></code>.

{{spoiler}}
{{spoiler}}
Used for information related to midgame content: information not easily learned by beginners or those who just started a specific story.

=== Major Spoilers ===
Syntax: <code><nowiki>{{spoiler}}</nowiki></code>
An example of a major spoiler tag. Use this for any information related to '''endgame content''', such as the endings of major storylines or world-shaking revelations, as well as for '''Fate-locked content''' ('''remember, you cannot copy-and-paste entire text dumps verbatim'''). If you notice, this tag is a bit larger than the others, and for good reason. Use this tag at the '''top''' of articles only, use the smaller major spoiler tag otherwise.

'''Template name: "major spoiler"'''

{{major spoiler}}
{{major spoiler}}
Used only at the top of articles. Used for information related to '''endgame content''': information revealed near the end of a storyline or major story revelations. Also used for discussion of '''Fate-locked content'''.

=== Major Spoilers (Small) ===
Syntax: <code><nowiki>{{major spoiler}}</nowiki></code>
An example of a small major spoiler tag. Use this tag for '''sections''' of articles only, otherwise it is the same as the tag above.

'''Template name: "major spoiler small"'''

{{major spoiler small}}
{{major spoiler small}}
Used only at the top of article sections. Serves the same purpose as the previous tag.

=== Devoured Spoilers ===
Syntax: <code><nowiki>{{major spoiler small}}</nowiki></code>
''The courier watches, then turns away.''

''The wax is crunchy. The note is chewy. Mm. Wax is exactly right. It doesn't taste of blood, yet, or ammonia, or stagnant water. Not yet. But wax is right.''<br />
{{peckish spoiler}}
Used only at the top of articles. Used for information related to '''''Seeking Mr Eaten's Name'''''.

'''Template name: "peckish spoiler" and "peckish spoiler small"'''
Syntax: <code><nowiki>{{peckish spoiler}}</nowiki></code>

{{peckish spoiler}}
{{peckish spoiler small}}
{{peckish spoiler small}}
Used only at the top of article sections. Serves the same purpose as the previous tag.

== Tables ==
Syntax: <code><nowiki>{{peckish spoiler small}}</nowiki></code>
Here is an example of how to make section dividers for pages with a ''very high'' amount of sections, such as [[Souls]] or the [[House of Rods and Chains]].

{{discordant spoiler}}
Used only at the top of articles. Used for information related to '''''Discordant Studies'''''.

Syntax: <code><nowiki>{{discordant spoiler}}</nowiki></code>

{{discordant spoiler small}}
Used only at the top of article sections. Serves the same purpose as the previous tag.

Syntax: <code><nowiki>{{discordant spoiler small}}</nowiki></code>

{{extended spoiler}}
Used only at the top of articles. Used for information related to any formerly restricted storylines, such as the endings of '''''Seeking Mr Eaten's Name''''', '''''Discordant Studies''''', a hidden route in '''''Where You And I Must Go''''', and '''''Secrets Framed in Gold'''''. Can also be used as a "catch-all" spoiler for articles which reveal extended details of the games' lore.

Syntax: <code><nowiki>{{extended spoiler}}</nowiki></code>

==Other Syntax==
Here is an example of how to make section dividers for certain pages.

== Dropdowns ==
Here's an example of a dropdown.
Dropdowns are mainly used for extreme spoilers that we'd like to remain hidden by default, for ''very'' long blocks of (sometimes unnecessary) content, or for articles with an ''extremely'' high amount of sections, such as [[Creatures]].

Our goal at the Fifth City Wiki is to be a resource for fans of the Fallen London/Sunless universe, serving as both a reference and a primer for the setting and characters.

This page serves as an introduction to the wiki's style, guidelines, tools, and templates.

Article Content

This wiki aims to provide background information on the setting and characters of the Neath, the High Wilderness, the Surface, and beyond. Our gameplay-related counterparts are the Fallen London Wiki, Sunless Sea Wiki, the Sunless Skies Wiki, and the Mask of the Rose Wiki. Topics beyond the wiki's scope include:

  • In-game options and routes
  • In-game rewards
  • Any other gameplay mechanics that do not convey story

Given the emphasis on background, the player character should not be mentioned in any capacity, and actions by the player should not be covered. Writers should avoid using first or second person to refer to the reader or player, though we do have exceptions for the sake of single-page in-character gimmicks.

Consider an article detailing a settlement on the brink of war:

  • Good: discussing the factions involved, and the politics that caused tensions to rise.
  • Not good: discussing how the player may resolve or escalate the conflict.

Citations are paramount: they are the wiki's lifeblood, no matter how trivial. Any claims that lack citing may be removed, edited, or marked with [citation needed].

Note that the wiki is currently being restructured and revised, so not every article may abide by these guidelines.

Citations

Any contributions should be cited where applicable.

Citation template:

<ref>{{Citation|url|title|source|}} ''"quoted text"''</ref>

  • Citation is the name of the template and should not be changed.
  • url is the direct link to the source, often a Fallen London, Sunless Sea, or Sunless Skies wiki page.
  • title is the name of the storylet or option with which the text can be easily found.
  • source is where the text is cited from, such as a game like Fallen London or a website like Twitter or Wikipedia.
  • quoted text is extremely important and should always be included. Please truncate quoted text if the cited text is longer than a few sentences.

Regarding the Use of Artificial Intelligence

Legally, we do not have any recourse to prohibit visitors from using our writing in Large Language Models or other text-based AI tools. However, due to administrative concerns, we request that users refrain from such activity.

Nearly all current visuals on this wiki originate from official artwork, but for the sake of clarity, we additionally prohibit the use of AI image generation (Midjourney, Firefly, DALL-E, et al) to create images for wiki use.

Spoiler Policy

Spoilers from paid in-game content are allowed, provided that:

  • Any discussion is under an appropriate spoiler tag
  • Quoted text is kept to a minimum

This is a major difference from the Fallen London Wiki, which does not spoil Fate-locked story content. Note that text dumps copied straight from the games, or datamined or leaked content from any Failbetter game, are not allowed and will be removed.

As of a July 2023 revision to Failbetter's spoiler policy, there is no currently prohibited content from any Failbetter game on this wiki. Any previously prohibited content will be discussed under one of the major spoiler warnings.

Image Policy

Please ensure that you have permission to use any images you are uploading to the wiki. Images not published by Failbetter must either be in the public domain, have a Creative Commons license that allows for copying and distribution, or be explicitly provided for wiki use by the creator. As noted above, we prohibit the use of AI image generation for wiki purposes.

When you upload an image, credit the source and include a licensing tag. The templates {{FL image}}, {{Sea image}}, {{Skies image}}, {{MotR image}}, and {{ST image}} can be added to image pages to automatically credit game assets and indicate fair use. These templates are applicable for Fallen London, Sunless Sea, Sunless Skies, Mask of the Rose, and The Silver Tree, respectively.

Spoiler Tags

Spoiler tags are used to signal information that players may not want to learn outside of gameplay. Spoilers are broadly not obscured or censored beyond the notification. Remember that player experience can vary: when in doubt, add a tag.
