"The Hanging Mountains are a constant in Parabola's changeable cartography. Always, they divide the Wastes from the Wanting-Way, and they are never to be found near the Smoking Shore. There was some great war between those places, long ago. The Mountains prevent a recurrence.
"The Mountains hang below the Coiling Spire. Along their peaks and barriers are speckled refuges and redoubts, the holdfasts of silverers and exiles, monks and the very lost."[1]
The Hanging Mountains are a rare example of a constant landmark in the ever-shifting dreamscape of Parabola.[1] The Skin of the Sun, Parabola's false-sun, hangs below them.[2]
Despite the inherent hostility of a range of upside-down mountains, not to mention the cold,[3] they are certainly not uninhabited by humans,[3][4] and the Viscountess of the Hanging Mountains claims the region for the cats.[5] The Viscountess of the Viric Jungle has a hideout on a low-hanging peak,[6] and there is an observatory high above, at the base of a slope, that allows a close-up view of the Skin of the Sun.[7] The highest - er, lowest - peak is commanded by the Jaded Pagoda, a Fourth City temple.[8]
