"I am always the same, do you see? I do not change. I proceed on the same path I always have. I am only one choice: and I will be content only when I have no choice at all."[1]

The Carnelian Exile is a mysterious nomad[2] who speaks laconically and has an irksome habit of answering others' questions before they can finish asking.[3][4] She was exiled from her home at Port Carnelian for joining the New Sequence, and she later severed all ties to the Dawn Machine as well.[5] She still has the characteristic bright golden eyes of the Machine's followers, however, so she keeps them concealed with dark sunglasses.[6]

The Exile is a strong believer in predestination and destiny:[7] she believes neither she nor her path may change, and seeks a state of being where she has "no choice at all."[8] To this end, she wants to one day travel to the Uttermost East.[9] Unfortunately, though she has heard the way East through Salt's song,[10] she cannot enter Frostfound to retrieve Salt's name and undergo the journey herself,[11] and she worries her time may be running out.[12]
