"Magdalene's is the closest thing many skyfarers have to a home. It offers services to alleviate the strain of a life spent too close to the stars."[1]
Magdalene's is a small resort village in the Reach that offers remedies for weary skyfarers' loneliness and other emotional afflictions, such as star-madness.
Small Comfort[edit]
"Some leave smiling, others weeping. No one can resist looking back behind them, even for just a peek."[2]
Magdalene's employs actors to run its services. For a fee, the attendants disguise themselves as loved ones to help skyfarers cope with the horrors of the open skies. Due to the personal nature of the service, guests often get too attached to either the attendants or the people they're impersonating, and refuse to leave.[3]
The chambers of Magdalene's are:
- The Solace Chambers, for when a skyfarer sees more than they should.[4]
- The Immersive Quarters, where the actors imitate whoever the patients says they should.[5]
- The Oneiric Chambers, for dealing with nightmares, of the more... abstract variety.[6]
The Amenable Host[edit]
"Of course. My staff will be pleased. It is a risk of our trade, when our clients can no longer separate identity and illusion, but seldom pleasant. It is a trap any of us could fall into."[7]
The Amenable Host is the founder of Magdalene's. He is a charismatic and handsome man with the arrogance of a Greek god; naturally, he has a lot of adoringly creepy fans. He tries his best to dodge these taboo-breaking stalkers, and only willingly shows himself to those lucky enough to have him as their assigned actor.[3]
The Host has assumed so many identities that he has forgotten who he was before he founded the resort. He has vivid memories of being a greedy prospector in Lustrum,[8] an industrialist in New Winchester,[9] and a heir to a house associated with the new Parlour of Virtue in Port Prosper.[10] Was he one of them, all of them, or none?
